Experience
Twenty years from advertising design into engineering. Read top to bottom it's a single arc — graphic artist, then self-taught developer, then staff engineer — with an independent thread running underneath the whole way.
The arc
Engineering Manager & Staff Engineer
Volvo Cars
A split role — engineering management paired with hands-on Staff Engineer work. I lead the team while staying in the code and owning technical direction across the frontend and platform layers of volvocars.com. Cut platform latency from 3 seconds to under 500ms, re-architected the vehicle configurator so roughly half of all customer interactions became effectively instant, and led the federated GraphQL platform behind product configuration, pricing, and commerce. Neither big win came from incremental tuning — both meant rethinking the problem a level up.
Senior Web Developer
Volvo Cars
Frontend and backend-for-frontend development on the Volvo Cars Car Configurator — building the rendering, state, and API-integration layers behind the high-traffic configuration experience. Engaged on contract through Screen Revolution; the work became permanent and grew into the Staff Engineer role.
Design Technologist
Seven Seconds → BBH
Built interactive web and mobile prototypes for major international brands at the agency (Seven Seconds, which became BBH), working shoulder-to-shoulder with designers, strategists, and creatives to turn concepts into working products. The role that sits squarely on the design/engineering boundary I've always worked across.
CTO
Chattoo
Founding engineer and CTO of an early-stage startup, building the product end to end — backend services, web, and mobile. The kind of full-ownership, shape-what-gets-built work I do my best in: investigating the problem, deciding the architecture, and writing the code that proves it.
Lead Engineer
Zeebox → Beamly
Led JavaScript engineering teams delivering second-screen television experiences at Zeebox (later Beamly), owning architecture and delivery of client applications and the supporting APIs. Worked across product, frontend, backend, and platform in a fast-moving startup.
Founder & Independent Engineer
Screen Revolution
The continuous independent thread running underneath the full-time roles — always building something of my own. Started as an Australian Pty Ltd (2009–2011), then a UK Ltd (2011–2022). Contracted into a range of clients including BBH, Grand Visual, TMW, and Chartlr, taking projects from problem to working product. Being self-directed throughout is part of how I work, not a side note.
Graphic Artist → Web Developer
Cummins & Partners
Where the atypical path began. I joined in 2001 as a graphic artist, taught myself to build what I designed, and moved into front-end development. The agency merged with Nitro to become CumminsNitro (2007), and later SapientNitro (2009). One continuous tenure that took me from advertising design into engineering — the origin of how I still work today.
